What can you do to help monarch butterflies?

Support the monarch butterfly population

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator plants.

    • Milkweed is the only plant on which monarchs lay their eggs and the only leaves monarch caterpillars will eat.

    • Pollinator plants provide nectar which is essential for adult monarchs.

  • Limit mowing before May 15 and after September 20.

  • Reduce your carbon footprint to slow the effects of climate change.

  • Don’t use pesticides or herbicides; remove invasive plant species.

  • Check out the resources below to become a layperson “citizen scientist”. You can help report adult monarch sightings, eggs, larvae, and the first emergence of milkweed in the spring to various organizations that study monarchs.
